"Lisa & Snickers Abuse Survivors"
"We were both abused. We both ran away. Now together we're bringing awareness, hope, and healing--to stop abuse, bullying, and violence in their tracks. We share our story of courage, love, and survival to help promote safety and help kids, teens, and even adults run in a whole new direction--to life--not to all the garbage we did!"

Lisa—
I had everything money could buy when I was a kid, but I longed for hugs, kisses, and to be told I was important. Since I didn’t find that at home, I looked to other people to meet that need. Sadly those others abused me, physically, sexually, and emotionally.
To avoid being bullied and abused further, I started to fight in school. Soon I was labeled the school bully and I had power & friends because everyone was afraid of me. But I hated being hurt, and I hated hurting others, so my new role just led to even worse things.
By 13, I was totally hanging with the wrong crowd, stealing, skipping school, and running away. For two years I lived out on the road, hitchhiking from state to state with an older boyfriend who swore he loved me and promised to protect me. But I was even more abused out there.
I was kidnapped, beaten, raped, and nearly killed. And at one point, my boyfriend even turned on me. After he told me he was sorry and would never hurt me again I made the poor choice to marry him. That relationship lasted 2 years, until he nearly beat me to death.
I’d like to say my bad choices ended there, but again I married a man who treated me like a real lady at first. So I thought he’d be the perfect guy. But after 7 painful years of marriage I learned that he had was not only addicted to pornography, but he had turned his dreaded addiction onto our three children.
After 26 years of making poor choices and being abused, I finally started to make some good choices for me and my children. I went back to school and got my GED, went to college, and started a career in writing. Today I have several books published, 100+ stories/articles, I’ve won numerous awards, and now I’m even teaching others how to write. But the most important part is I’m remarried to a loving husband (15+ years), we now have four wonderful children, I’m making better choices, and I'm happier than I’ve ever been.
""Don't be used and abused like I was, and give in to violent and abusive relationships, express your rights and demand that others always treat you right! Don't run to all the things I did, Run To Life." -Lisa Freeman

Snickers—
My home life wasn’t the best either, so I ran away from home too—under Lisa’s van in the middle of a busy intersection. Luckily, she stopped just in time, took me into her arms, and home to her brand new house. She told her four children I could only stay one night, but that was 8 years ago. Our award-winning story, “A New Home” was published in Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul & we made the front page of the newspaper (above).
Since then, I’ve learned a bunch of fun, neat tricks, I got my Pet Therapy License, I won an award for making 50 visits to the hospital and nursing home, and now I’m even helping Lisa teach other dogs and owners how to do Pet Therapy. Not bad for an old, abused, runaway dog, huh?
